The Golden State Killer case changed everything. Thrust into the spotlight by crime writer Michelle McNamara’s book, I’ll Be Gone in The Dark, public interest rose and law enforcement honed their investigation and made the decision to use Forensic Genetic Genealogy to try to identify the Golden State Killer (GSK). It worked. Joseph James DeAngelo was identified and the barn door of a relatively new method of crime solving was blown wide open.
Melanie and Tynan had been using genetic genealogy before GSK was arrested in 2018 and have provided critical investigative leads to help solve nationally known cold cases. While working together, they quickly became “partners in crime” who, they discovered, happen to be seventh cousins.
